Most players notice the Phantasms first, then miss where the real damage is coming from. With Reliquarian, those little minions can feed flat physical damage straight into your own spell, so the build stops behaving like a standard summoner. That matters when planning gear, sockets, and even early upgrades bought with POE currency, because your weapon no longer has to be The Black Cane just to access the mechanic. You can use that slot to solve a real problem: faster Phantasm creation, better crit, conversion, or simply more defence.
The count on paper is only half the story. A character that reaches twelve Phantasms while clearing a crowded map may feel great, then walk into a boss room and spend several awkward seconds with almost no buff. That's the bit people tend to gloss over. You want a setup that starts cleanly from zero and rebuilds after the minions get wiped. Corpse-consuming skills fit nicely because they can create bodies, consume them, and keep the regular casting loop moving. Soulwrest is still an obvious option, but it isn't automatically the best one now that Reliquarian frees up the weapon slot.
What a practical test usually shows
| Test state | Active Phantasms | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh boss entry | 0 | Your real baseline |
| Normal combat loop | 6 to 8 | Your dependable damage level |
That middle number is the one worth building around. If your spell feels good at six or eight Phantasms, extra bodies are a bonus rather than a requirement. Flat physical damage also gives you room to choose a direction. You can stay physical and keep the tree fairly straightforward, or convert the damage and lean into elemental scaling, penetration, and crit. Don't try to chase both without a reason. It's a common trap: someone adds conversion, keeps stacking physical modifiers, then wonders why the character feels expensive but only hits a bit harder.
Spell choice should follow the engine, not the other way round. A skill with frequent hits and solid added-damage effectiveness can get far more from Phantasmal Might than a spell chosen for its gem tooltip alone. Cast speed often feels better than another minor level boost once the Phantasms are providing most of the base damage. Still, don't gut your defences for a bigger hideout number. If you're comparing upgrades or deciding whether to POE buy currency for a new weapon, test ramp time, minion survival, and damage while moving. Those details decide whether the build actually holds together in a hard fight.
